Sue Inouye recently retired from her position as professor of linguistics at University of Hawai’i Kapi’olani Community College. Sue grew up in New Hampshire, where she attended the University of New Hampshire. Sue and Abigail earned their PhDs in linguistics at UCLA as “ph” students, Sue studying phonetics and Abigail, phonology. She remains one of the world’s leading experts on rhotics, or “r”-type sounds. Abigail was a tangential member of the UCLA phonetics lab, with Sue being a full-blown member. At that time, the lab’s senior faculty member was Peter Ladefoged, known among other things for his work as the linguistics  consultant on the film “My Fair Lady,” which won the Best Picture Oscar the year Abigail was born.

Cid Inouye is a partner at O’Connor Playdon Guben & Inouye LLP, one of Hawaii’s oldest law firms, in Honolulu, HI. Cid played collegiate volleyball at the University of Hawai’i and at the University of New Hampshire. His daughter Rachel followed in his footsteps as a collegiate volleyball player and was recruited to play at UCLA. Cid and Sue’s son-in-law Ka’imi (Rachel’s husband) was the kicker for UCLA Bruins football where, in his senior year, he won the Lou Groza award – the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy for kickers. Ka’imi is now in the NFL as the kicker for the Houston Texans. Cid and his son Jake both studied mechanical engineering, and Jake is an astronautical engineer working in the space industry.
